Long-Term Complications of Type 2 Diabetes!

The focus of this article is not to cover all the complications but provide you with enough knowledge of what are the possible complications.

Here is a short list of type 2 diabetes complications:

  • Kidney failure
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke
  • Neuropathy
  • Blindness
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Alzheimer's
  • Dementia

Diabetes and Kidney Failure

With the elevated glucose levels, tiny vessels of kidney get damaged.

In the beginning of nephropathy (sick kidneys), the kidney’s don’t filter as well as it used to which means efficiency of kidneys goes down.

When the kidneys get irreparably damaged, dialysis is the only solution.

Diabetes and Heart Attack

As shared above that blood vessels get damaged with more glucose in the blood. Each artery is responsible to supply blood to different body parts as well as to heart itself. When an artery gets clogged up with plaque (made up of fat and cholesterol), that portion of the heart stops receiving the blood and eventually it dies off. This is called Myocardial infraction (MI) which is also known as heart attack.

Diabetes and Stroke

The arteries which supply blood to brain are very thin and fragile. These arteries are responsible to supply blood to each part of the brain. When artery serving to a specific area burst or rupture, the victim may not move his arms or legs or can’t talk clearly. This is called cerebral vascular accident (CVA) or stroke.

Diabetes and Neuropathy

When the tiny blood vessels that serve blood to nerves start getting damaged due to higher glucose level, nerves themselves begin to die. For many diabetes patients, a tingling in the fingers, hand, toes, legs or feet is the first sign of peripheral neuropathy.

If blood sugars are high and no action is taken, over the time the nerves stop function. As this continues, you may lose all sensation, especially on the soles of your feet. This is very dangerous as you will not feel any cuts and blisters which may lead to serious infections.

Diabetes and Blindness

Due to elevated blood sugar levels, there may be damage to your retina. In fact blurred vision is the first symptom of undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. Over time, vision is distorted and blindness eventually occurs.

Diabetes and Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is often very embarrassing for a man who suffers from it to discuss about it with a physician. Due to high blood sugar levels, tiny blood vessels serving blood supply to genital are impacted. Research shows that one of the main causes of ED in diabetics is damage to the nitric oxide pathway. Nitric oxide is a chemical that is released into the bloodstream by the lining of the blood vessels. With the elevated blood glucose levels, there is a decrease in nitric oxide which leads to poor blood flow and ultimately responsible for one of the causes of erectile dysfunction.
