Complications of diabetes make diabetes a challenging health risk.

When blood gets saturated with extra sugar or glucose and gets pumped all over the body, damage happens to every organ. That’s why it is important to keep the blood sugar level in check even if you need to take insulin.

We will look at the long-term complications in the next article but in this post, we are going to review short-term complications of diabetes.

Short-Term Complications of Diabetes!

There are following two main short-term complications of diabetes:

  1. Hyperglycemia
  2. Hypoglycemia

Hyperglycemia – A Short-Term Complication of Diabetes!

In this condition, blood sugar level goes above the accepted normal range.

When blood sugar levels goes up, it causes damages to our tissues and if this level goes up too much beyond the accepted normal range, it can be a life-threatening challenge.

When there is excess sugar in the body, it can not be used as a source of energy. If it can’t be used as a source of energy, it is broken down into fat and protein and in this process, there is a by-product known as ketones, generated in the body. A high level of circulating ketones not only damages body tissues but also may create confusion, unconsciousness and in extreme cases coma.

So in case of hyperglycemia, the focus is to lower blood sugar levels as quickly as possible and keep in within the normal ranges.

Hypoglycemia – A Short-Term Complication of Diabetes!

When the sugar level drops too low, it is called hypoglycemia.

If there is lack of enough glucose in the blood, your blood may not feed your brain as glucose is needed by the brain. That’s why in case of hypoglycemia, it can lead to unconsciousness and seizures.

If you are being treated for diabetes and taking drugs to control your blood sugar, then you should pay extra attention to following symptoms of hypoglycemia:

  • Rapid heart rate
  • Excessive weakness
  • Cold skin
  • Dizziness or confusion
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Unusual sweats

It is always a good idea to acquaint yourself with these symptoms and take action to bring your levels back up with your favorite snack.
